A Family Affair
His art looks deceptively simple, but behind it all is a great talent that deftly guides the quick lines and dashes of color. It's safe to say Abla's talent has come to fruition in this exhibition, arguably one of his best to date. In one painting, a father, mother and daughter are posing for a picture. The man is dressed in a galabeyya, jacket and turban, marks of a well-to-do merchant of the 1930s and 1940s. The lady is dressed in a long dress; she is modest yet unveiled. In the middle is their child, standing on a chair to be on the same level as the parents. It is all fairly simple, yet what Abla says about emotion is true: You feel the bond between the three; although they are not looking at each other, the love is there, revealed in their eyes. The background of this painting is overwhelmed with huge floral motifs, and at one point, one of the flowers blends with the woman, becoming her hair accessory.
At Last, a Presence
This weekend, the BMF will launch a summit on the international AIDS epidemic with a panel discussion to which they've invited students from over 40 other schools. In the last year, the BMF has co-sponsored events with 20 other campus organizations and has become a strong voice in UC politics. These days, black men aren't sitting on the steps of their freshman dorm listening to “Suicidal Thoughts" and contemplating dropping out. They're running for UC president, lobbying administrators, commanding Harvard's attention. They've taken charge. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Ashong was the first of them all. A captivating orator who could hypnotize his audience with unceasing hand motions and a spark in his eye, Ashong was all over the campus, in the Black Students' Association (BSA), Kuumba, the Haitian Alliance, and occasionally at Asian American Association meetings—when they had ice cream.

But no matter how far we evolve, there will always be something in the far reaches of our educated minds which will bring us back to a time when we feared the moon itself. We cannot escape it, for deep down we are still animals. We will always be haunted. We will always know fear. That is why Halloween "spooks" us. This particular night frightened our ancestors, and it will continue to frighten their descendants. As soon as the sun sets and All Hallow's Eve is upon us, witches, ghosts, and goblins awaken from their long sleep. On this night there is no escaping it. We are afraid. II. Sources of Weapons for Militias in Punjab and Kashmir
II. Sources of Weapons for Militias in Punjab and Kashmir India has long accused the government of Pakistan of directly supplying weapons, as well as other forms of military support, to militants in Punjab and Kashmir. Most long-time observers of the region concur.(5) Both Sikh and Kashmiri militant leaders have acknowledged as much,(6) and many of the weapons used by militants in both states clearly were acquired in Pakistan. Nevertheless, there are many complexities and uncertainties about the arms supply relationship. Available evidence suggests that most weapons obtained by Sikh and Kashmiri militants have come from two sources inside Pakistan: the arms bazaar in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province (nwfp)--a vast black market for weapons--and members of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (isi), operating either on their own or with the tacit or explicit complicity of the central Pakistani government.
